IV. Tips for Painting Kitchen Cabinets
Painting your cabinets is a great place to start if you’re considering giving your kitchen a fresh look. Whether looking for a new color or simply updating the finish, painting your kitchen cabinets can significantly impact your home. Here are a few tips to help you get started.
A. Choosing the right paint
Benjamin Moore or Renner cabinet paint
Benjamin Moore is a famous interior and exterior paint brand, and their cabinet paint is no exception. Known for its durability and quality, Benjamin Moore cabinet paint is an excellent choice for those looking to refresh their kitchen cabinets. However as a professional, we use Renner Paints in our shop to spray the doors and drawers
Melamine Paint
There is no specific paint for melamine paint. If the process of painting melamine cabinets is appropriately followed, Renner or Benjamin Moore Paint with a suitable bonding primer can do the job.
Remember that Kitchen cupboard paint is specifically formulated to provide a durable finish that can withstand the wear and tear of a busy kitchen. So, never use the standard wall paints for the cabinets.
B. Preparing the cabinets
Painting laminate cabinets
If you have laminate cabinets, it’s essential to prepare them before painting them correctly. Sand down the surface of the cabinets to remove any gloss or sheen, and clean the cabinets with a deglosser to ensure proper adhesion. On 90% of kitchen cabinets, even if you have wooden cabinet doors, the cabinets’ sides and boxes are made of laminate.
Melamine cabinets are easier to paint than other types of kitchen cabinets. However, it’s still important to prepare them properly.
Painting oak cabinets
Oak cabinets require much more preparation than laminate cabinets or other types of wooden cabinets like maple cabinets. Sand down the surface, clean with a deglosser, and fill any holes or cracks with wood filler.
C. Choosing the right finish
Satin or Semi-Gloss
When choosing a finish for your kitchen cabinets, you have two main options: Satin or Semi-Gloss. Satin has a softer, more matte finish, while semi-gloss has a shinier, more reflective finish. Consider the style of your kitchen and personal preferences when deciding which finish is best for you.
Best sheen for kitchen cabinets
The best sheen for kitchen cabinets is subjective and depends on personal preference. A High-Gloss or Semi-Gloss finish is shiny and reflective but may show fingerprints and scratches more easily. A satin finish is less glossy and more forgiving in terms of showing wear and tear. In contrast, a matte finish is non-reflective and provides a soft, velvety look; however a little tricky to clean.
Consider your lifestyle, the amount of wear and tear your cabinets will experience, and your personal preferences when choosing the best sheen for your kitchen cabinets.
